So what's the role really like?

We spoke to Warren Mutch, Head of Speciality Finance

What is Structured Lending?

Our Structured Lending team originates and executes debt facilities for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Those debt requirements are often complex, due to either:

 i) the nature of the SME that requires the debt (e.g. a specialist business such as healthcare company or housing developer), or

ii) the nature of the financing required (e.g. for a business acquisition). Shawbrook brings together these specialist teams under the Structured Lending banner.

What does a typical day look like for you and your team?

I lead one of the teams within Structured Lending, so my focus is on supporting our team originate and execute new deals for the bank. As such, my day will commonly involve speaking to SMEs that have a funding requirement, to understand their needs and whether a loan or other debt facility would work well for them. Of course, we also need to complete sufficient diligence to ensure that a loan from Shawbrook would be affordable for them!
I have eight individuals in my direct team, so we’re constantly talking about new deals they are working on and any developments/news in our market. I’m also regularly thinking about their development and how to build their skills to help them move up in their careers.

Are there opportunities to progress in the future?

Absolutely! We’re always looking to progress high quality individuals, and have supported a number of Analysts promoted through to Associate Director and Director roles. In Structured Lending, individuals can be given a high level of responsibility at an early stage of their careers – helping them grow professionally and personally, of course with the support and coaching of senior management.
